The Structure of the Collodion Membrane and Its Electrical Behavior v. the Influence of the Thickness of Dried Collodion Membranes upon Their Electromotive Behavior by Karl Sollner and Charles W. Carr

چکیده
The electrochemical properties of collodion membranes are known to vary greatly with the nature of the collodion preparation used, more acid preparations yielding membranes of higher electrochemical activity, x-s The assumption has always been made, tacitly or expressly, that the thickness of the membrane is of no influence. Thus, it has been generally assumed that the characteristic concentration potential e across dried collodion membranes must be independent of the thickness of the membranesY We became doubtful of the validity of this assumption. As was pointed out in a preceding communication, 5 the concentration potentials across different membrane specimens frequently vary considerably, even if the membranes are prepared from the same collodion solution under conditions as nearly iden' deal as possible. The following set of facts also needs to be considered. I t has been demonstrated that the behavior of dried collodion membranes with solutions of strong electrolytes is due to (1) its micellar structural arrangement, that is, to the presence of interstices of larger than minimal (molecular) di-

The classical investigations of Michaelis and collaborators 1 on the dried collodion membrane as well as the work of other investigators have revealed the basic physicochemical properties of membranes of porous character which are selectively cation-permeable. Dried collodion membranes prepared from suitable collodion ~-4 were found to allow the cations of uni-univalent strong inorganic electro...

The preceding paper 1 of this series describes the preparation of "megapermselective" collodion membranes which are extremely impermeable to anions, but at the same time are very permeable to univalent cations. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the preparation and the properties of analogous electropositive "megapermselecfive" membranes which are very impermeable to cations, but a...

In preceding communications t, 2 we were led to the conclusion that the electrochemical activity of collodion membranes, as manifested by concentration potentials, etc., is due principally to acidic impurities. Accordingly, different brands of collodion differ widely as to their activity, the purer brands being less active. The impure (but active) foreign brands of collodion, heretofore general...

In a recent publication Carr and Sollner 1 have reported on the water uptake and the swelling of collodion membranes in water and solutions of strong inorganic electrolytes. They determined the weight and volume changes of collodion membranes when placed in water and when transferred from water to solutions of strong electrolytes. I t was found that dried collodion membranes swell reversibly to...

1. Theoretical considerations lead to the conclusion that dissociable acidic groups present to a varying extent in different collodion preparations determine the electrochemical behavior of membranes cast from these preparations. It is further reasoned that the base exchange capacity of the collodion surfaces is the true quantitative measure of the abundance of the dissociable groups. 2. The co...
